Kimberly Washington, a yoga instructor in the Boston region, felt lifting weights at the gym was the only way to gain strength until she was diagnosed with rheumatoid arthritis and switched to yoga.

According to Washington, who spoke to U.S. News & World Report, holding yoga poses resulted in significant gains in her strength. 

 Because the positions required her to bend and stretch, yoga helped her gain muscle and bone mass.
